"Elegy for a Dead Soldier" by Karl Shapiro

"Underneath this wooden cross there lies
A Christian killed in battle.  You who read
Remember that this stranger died in pain;
And passing here, if you can lift your eyes
Upon a peace kept by human creed
Know that one soldier has not died in vain."

  1. "Upon a peace kept by human creed" does not scan correctly. Having searched the Internet, I think that the line was written "Upon a peace kept by a human creed". Some sites have "the human creed", but I think that Shapiro would have had no part of that.
